Bolting bigger tires on a Can-Am Defender HD10 looks great, but every extra inch of tire diameter steals low-end torque. The machine feels lazy pulling away with a load, the belt works harder, and crawling gets jerky. This transmission gear reduction kit swaps in shorter gearing inside the transmission so the Defender pulls like stock again on 30" to 40"+ tires.
Highlights
- 10%, 20% or 30% reduction options
- 8620 chromoly steel gears
- Heat treated and precision ground
- Improved contact pattern for smooth, quiet operation
- Punchier acceleration on larger tires
Pick the Right Reduction
A 10% reduction suits a mild tire upgrade. More aggressive builds with bigger tires, portals or heavy loads usually need 20% or 30% to bring back the low-end pull. All three options are the same price, so choose by tire size and how you use the machine.
Tire Size to Get Back to Stock Top Speed
| Stock tire size | 10% reduction | 20% reduction | 30% reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| 27" | 30" | 34" | 38" |
| 28" | 31" | 35" | 40" |
| 30" | 33" | 38" | 43" |
Read across from your stock tire size to see roughly how big a tire each reduction supports while keeping stock top speed. If you haul heavy or ride a lot of mud, many owners step up one level for extra pull.
Built to Take the Extra Load
The gears are 8620 chromoly steel, heat treated for hardness and precision ground for an accurate mesh. Better gear contact means a quieter transmission and long life under the extra stress big tires add.

Installation Notes
Installing gear reduction means opening the transmission, so it's a job for an experienced mechanic or a shop. XMR, Limited and Lone Star models only see a reduction with the 20% or 30% options (about 10% or 20% lower than their factory gearing).
