When you want your Can-Am Maverick X3 to tower over everything else in the mud hole, an 8" portal gear lift is about as big as it gets. This GDP portal kit lifts the machine right at the hubs, makes room for tires up to 40" (46" with a 6" lift kit), and builds a gear reduction into each corner so the engine can actually turn that much tire. You pick the gear reduction, the housing material, and single or dual idler gears, so the portals are set up for the way you ride.
Gear Down and Go Big
If you like to go big, it doesn't get any bigger than an 8" GDP portal gear lift. That's a huge amount of room for tires up to 40", plus a big jump in torque thanks to the gear reduction built into every portal box. You can choose a 45%, 60%, or 70% reduction, and you can make the gear set even tougher by upgrading to dual idler gears. Either way, you end up with portals built for your machine and your riding. Your Maverick X3 will feel like a completely different machine when you're sitting high above everyone else and throwing bigger roost than anybody on the trail.
What Is a Dual Idler?
The dual idler design came out of years of research and development. A standard portal box uses one idler gear to carry power from the input gear down to the output gear. The dual idler setup adds a second idler gear in the portal box, which spreads the load over twice as much gear surface. That means more reliable torque transfer and the strongest gear set you can get. Two idler gears only help if they mesh perfectly, so the gears are precision CNC ground to make sure they do. They're cut from 9310 steel alloy, one of the toughest gear steels in the industry. If you've never thought dual idlers mattered, this is the setup that changes that.
45%, 60%, and 70% Gear Reductions Built for Mud
If you're serious about mud, the first thing you need is a big lift. The second is big tires, and the third is the gearing to turn them. These 8" portals take care of all three. You'll have room for 40" tires, and the 45%, 60%, and 70% gear reductions give you the extreme torque you need to push through deeper, thicker mud holes. If you ride bounty holes and mud parks, that's the kind of torque that gets you to the other side when everyone else is digging out.
Choosing a Gear Reduction
The basic trade-off is simple: a bigger gear reduction gives you more torque at the wheels and a lower top speed. The 45% reduction keeps more of your speed while still helping turn big tires. The 60% and 70% reductions are for riders who care more about pulling through deep mud with huge tires than about top speed. If you're stuck between two, think about the biggest tire you plan to run and the kind of riding you do most, and if you're still not sure, ask us before you order.
A Gear Reduction That Protects Your Drivetrain
Because portals put the gear reduction right in the hub, the reduction happens after your whole drivetrain. Your axles, differential, transmission, and prop shafts don't have to work as hard to spin big tires, so they wear less. That adds up to more miles out of the expensive parts of your machine, which is something a lift kit and big tires alone can't give you.
Stronger Housings and Backing Plates
GDP portals have been used, broken, and refined for years, and that experience shows in how they're built. You can choose cast aluminum housings or 6061 billet aluminum housings made in the USA (and the billet ones look great). Either way, the strength comes from a better design. The housings are paired with 5/16" backing plates made from an advanced steel alloy, which makes this one of the brawniest portal kits on the market.
- Housings are reinforced for gear retention and optimized for oil flow
- Advanced steel alloy backing plates are stronger than chromoly
- Pairs well with Portal Blood, a gear oil formulated specifically for GDP portals
- No gimmicks and no vents. Testing showed vents do more harm than good, so these portals don't use them
Advanced Gaskets, Seals, and Bearings
Keeping oil in and water and mud out is what lets a portal box live a long life. These portals use:
- Advanced gaskets and O-rings with excellent oil resistance and low deterioration rates
- A sealed input gear and a double-lipped output seal
- 100% sealing coverage throughout, so you can forget about oil leaks
- Double angular contact output bearings to prevent premature wear
- Roller idler and drive bearings to keep the gears meshing perfectly
Better Gears
The gears are precision ground from 9310 billet steel alloy. They're designed to take all the torque and abuse you can throw at them without chipping teeth or blowing apart. The precise design and manufacturing also keep them cool and quiet, even when you're hammering the throttle in the middle of a mud hole.
Billet or Cast Housings
You choose billet or cast aluminum housings to finish your portals. The billet housings are CNC machined in the USA from 6061 aluminum and give you more strength and consistency than cast. There's also nothing quite like spraying the mud off a set of clean billet housings after a ride.
A Frame Stiffener Is Required
You need a frame stiffener with the 8" portal gear lift. The stock X3 frame just isn't built for this much lift and tire. Hit something hard enough and the OEM frame will bend, and that's been proven the hard way in testing. A frame stiffener reinforces the frame enough to let you ride 8" portals with monster tires and no worries. If you don't already have one, choose a frame stiffener (or a frame stiffener with a winch mount) in the options when you order.

Who It's For and What Pairs Well
This is the kit for mud riders and big-tire builds that need maximum clearance and torque. Since the portals are going on anyway, it's a good time to look at our Can-Am Maverick X3 lift kits, heavy-duty X3 axles, and X3 frame and chassis parts. If 8" is more than you need, compare the 4" and 6" kits in our Can-Am Maverick X3 portal gear lifts.
