Not every Can-Am Maverick X3 needs a monster lift. If you want more ground clearance, room for up to 32" tires, and a little extra torque without giving up much top speed, this 4" GDP portal gear lift is the place to start. It lifts the machine right at the hubs, builds a 15% or 30% gear reduction into each corner, and lets you choose single or dual idler gears and cast or billet housings to suit your build.
Why Riders Pick It
- 4" portal lift adds ground clearance right where you need it, at the hubs
- 15% or 30% gear reduction adds torque and takes strain off the drivetrain
- Selectable idler setup so you can run dual or single idler gearing
- Cast or billet housings to match your build and budget
- Limited lifetime warranty backing your purchase
Build Your X3 Your Way
The Maverick X3 is good at just about everything, and people build them for mud, racing, dunes, and trail riding. A 4" GDP portal gear lift lets you take your X3 in whichever direction you want. GDP didn't make the first side-by-side portal kit, just the first one that riders really cared about. You can choose a 15% or 30% gear reduction, or add dual idler gears for over-the-top strength. The point is options, so your machine doesn't have to look and ride like everybody else's.
The Dual Idler Explained
A portal box normally uses a single idler gear between the input and output gears. After years of development, the dual idler version adds a second idler gear in the box. The load is spread across twice the gear surface, which gives you more dependable torque transfer and the strongest gear set you can buy. For two idlers to help, they have to mesh perfectly, and precision CNC grinding makes sure they do. The gears are made from 9310 steel alloy, known as one of the toughest gear steels in the industry. Dual idlers also add a 3/4" front and rear offset, for 1.5" of total extension.
Made for All Riding Styles
These portals aren't built for just one kind of rider. Whether you spend your time in the dunes, on the trails, or in the mud pits, a GDP portal lift makes the ride better.
- 15% gear reduction: keeps rides fast while giving you enough added torque to have some fun.
- 30% gear reduction: the pick for gearing down and going big with larger tires.
- Dual idlers: worth it if you regularly push your machine to its breaking point.
These Maverick X3 portals have the strength to handle being pushed to the limit, whichever setup you choose.
Easier on the Drivetrain
Because the gear reduction lives in the portal box at each wheel, your axles, differentials, and transmission aren't the ones doing the extra work when you add lift and bigger tires. That reduced stress is one of the biggest reasons riders choose portals over a plain lift kit with oversized tires.
Some of the Strongest Portals Made
If you're wondering whether these portals can take the trail abuse you dish out, they can. The cast and billet aluminum housings are thicker and stronger than typical portal housings, and they're paired with 5/16" backing plates made from an advanced steel alloy. Together, that makes for a very tough set of Can-Am portals.
- Housings reinforced for gear retention and optimized for oil flow
- Advanced steel alloy backing plates, stronger than chromoly
- Best paired with Portal Blood, a gear oil formulated for GDP portals
- No vents and no gimmicks. Testing found vents do more harm than good
Seals and Bearings That Keep It Running
- Advanced gaskets and O-rings with excellent oil resistance and low deterioration rates
- Sealed input gear and a double-lipped output seal
- 100% sealing coverage throughout, so oil leaks aren't a worry
- Double angular contact output bearings to prevent premature wear
- Roller idler and drive bearings that keep the gears meshing perfectly
Good seals matter on a portal because the boxes sit low and spend a lot of time in water and mud. Keeping the gear oil in and the dirt out is what lets these run for the long haul.
Consider a Frame Stiffener
Portal gear lifts are made for hard, no-holds-barred riding. That kind of riding, combined with bigger tires and more lift, puts a lot of strain on your X3's frame. You can protect the chassis by adding a frame stiffener, which you can select in the options (alone or with a winch mount) when you order.
What's in the Box
- (4) Assembled portal hub boxes complete with 9310 gears, seals, output shaft, gaskets, and thrust bearings
- (4) Universal hubs and precision-ground stainless steel slotted rotors with lugs
- (4) Specialized steel alloy backing plates
- (4) Steel caliper mounting plates
- (2) Steel steering arms
- Extended brake lines
- All required hardware, including a recessed castle nut socket and heim installation tool
- Frame stiffener (optional)
Gear Reduction Recommendations With 4" Portals
| Tire Size | Required Suspension Setup | Recommended Gear Reduction |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 32" | Stock | 15% |
| Up to 32" | 3" Lift Kit | 15% |
These gear reductions are general guidelines for keeping factory top speed. Installing a larger reduction than recommended gives you extra torque and a lower top speed. If you're unsure, ask us before you order.
