A 6" portal gear lift is the sweet spot for a lot of Can-Am Maverick X3 builds: a big jump in ground clearance, room for bigger tires, and gearing that gives you back the torque those tires take away. This Gen 3 GDP portal kit gives your X3 the lift and the gear reduction in one box. You choose a 30%, 45%, or 60% reduction, cast or billet housings, and single or dual idler gears, so it can be set up for dunes, trails, or deep mud.
Why Riders Pick It
- 6" portal lift adds ground clearance right at the hubs
- 30%, 45%, or 60% gear reduction adds torque and takes stress off the drivetrain
- Selectable idler setup lets you choose dual or single idler gearing
- Cast or billet housings so you can pick the construction that suits your build
- Limited lifetime warranty for peace of mind
Gen 3 Portals, Geared for Every Rider
GDP wasn't the first company to sell a side-by-side portal kit, but it was the first one riders really cared about. This 6" kit lifts your Maverick X3 and adds a gear reduction at the same time. Customize it with a 30%, 45%, or 60% reduction, or go all in with dual idler gears for maximum strength. These portals came out of a lot of hard work and countless hours of real-world testing, all so you can get the most out of your X3.
How the Dual Idler Works
Inside each portal box, an idler gear carries power from the input to the output. The dual idler version, developed over years of research, puts a second idler gear in the box so the load is shared across twice as much gear surface. You get steadier torque transfer and the strongest gear set available. That only works if both idlers mesh perfectly, so the gears are precision CNC ground. They're made from 9310 steel alloy, which is one of the toughest gear materials in the industry. With this level of quality behind it, the dual idler is a real upgrade, not a gimmick.
Pick the Reduction That Fits How You Ride
If you're always looking for the next challenge, these portals were made for you. There's a setup here for dunes, mud, and everything in between:
- 30% reduction: a smaller reduction for fast riding that still packs plenty of torque.
- 45% reduction: lets you run bigger tires and take on rougher terrain.
- 60% reduction: the choice for building the ultimate mud machine.
You can also add dual idlers to push your build even further. A portal gear lift gives you your torque back, so even a wild, oversized build can keep up with the best of them. Keep in mind that more reduction means more torque and less top speed, so match the reduction to the tire you plan to run.
Protect Your Most Important Parts
With portals, the gear reduction happens at the hub. That means less stress on the drivetrain, and the expensive parts of your machine don't have to work overtime to make up for 6" of extra lift and bigger tires. Your axles, prop shaft, differential, and transmission get an easier life, and they'll last longer for it.
Cast or Billet Housings Built for Strength
GDP is one of the strongest and most trusted portal systems out there. Both the cast and billet aluminum housings are thick and strong, and they're backed by years of real-world experience, so you know what you're getting. Add 5/16" backing plates made from an advanced steel alloy and you have a seriously tough set of Maverick X3 portals.
- Housings reinforced for gear retention and optimized for oil flow
- Advanced steel alloy backing plates that are stronger than chromoly
- Works with Portal Blood, a gear oil made specifically for GDP portals
- No vents and no gimmicks. Vents were tested and found to do more harm than good
Gaskets, Seals, and Bearings That Last
A portal is only as good as its seals and bearings. Here's what keeps these running:
- Advanced gaskets and O-rings with excellent oil resistance and low deterioration
- Sealed input gear and double-lipped output seal
- 100% sealing coverage throughout, so oil leaks aren't something you have to think about
- Double angular contact output bearings that prevent premature wear
- Roller idler and drive bearings that keep the gears meshing perfectly
Add a Frame Stiffener
A frame stiffener is highly recommended with the 6" portal gear lift. It reinforces the front end so you can ride your portals with big tires without worrying about the frame. The frame stiffener must be selected in the options when you order if you want it in the kit, and you can also get it combined with a winch mount.
6" Portal Questions
What does a portal gear lift actually do?
Each portal box moves the wheel hub lower than the axle, which lifts the whole machine at the wheels instead of only at the suspension. The gears inside the box also add a gear reduction, so you get clearance and torque from the same part.
Will my wheels work?
Maybe not. These portals need an 18" or larger wheel, with limits on backspacing and a minimum center hole size (or a 1" wheel spacer). The full wheel requirements are listed under the fitment table below. Check them against your wheels before you order.
Do I have to buy the frame stiffener?
It isn't forced on you, but it's highly recommended. Portals plus bigger tires put a lot of extra strain on the X3 frame, and the stiffener helps protect it. If you already have one, choose that option.
Single or dual idler?
Single idler portals are strong on their own. Dual idlers share the load across two gears for even more strength, and that's the pick if you regularly push your machine to its limits.

Who It's For and What Pairs Well
The 6" kit is a strong all-around choice if you want real clearance and bigger tires without going to the extreme 8" setup. A Can-Am Maverick X3 lift kit can be combined with it, and heavy-duty X3 axles are worth a look for big-tire builds.
