An 8" portal gear lift is about as big as a Polaris RZR XP 1000 gets. The GDP 8" Portal Gear Lift raises the machine at the hubs, so suspension geometry stays intact, and adds a 45%, 60% or 70% gear reduction right at the wheel to turn 40" tires on a stock suspension. It also widens the machine 4" per side (8" total) with 1.5" forward and rear offset. You can choose dual or single idler gearing in 9310 steel, cast or USA-made billet aluminum housings, and an optional frame stiffener, which a portal-equipped XP 1000 needs. It fits the 2014-2023 RZR XP 1000 and XP 4 1000.

Gear Down and Go Big
8" portals give you a lot of room for huge 40" tires and a lot of torque to turn them. For ultimate strength, pair the 70% reduction with dual idler gears. Your RZR XP 1000 will feel like a whole new machine, towering over everyone else and throwing bigger roost.
What Is a Dual Idler?
After years of research and development, the dual idler portals place a second idler gear in the portal box. That spreads the load over twice as much gear surface for more reliable torque transfer and the strongest gear set available. Two idlers only help if they're mated perfectly, so the gears are precision CNC ground from 9310 steel alloy. The single idler is the lower-cost option; the dual idler is the one to choose for the biggest tires, the deepest reduction and the hardest riding. In this kit the 70% reduction is offered with dual idler gears, and the options will show which idler setups are available for your choice of reduction and housing.
45%, 60% and 70% Reductions for Mud
Serious mud riding takes a big lift, big tires, and the gear reduction to turn them. The 8" portals cover all three: room for 40" tires, and 45%, 60% or 70% reductions for extreme torque to pull through deeper, thicker mud holes. As a rough guide, 45% suits the low end of the big-tire range and more mixed riding, while 60% and 70% are for the heaviest tires and mud-focused builds where low-end torque matters more than top speed. A portal gear reduction calculator is available to help you choose based on tire size.
Reduction That Protects the Drivetrain
Portals put the gear reduction in the hub, after the entire drivetrain. That means the axles, differential, transmission and prop shafts all work less and wear less, so you get more miles out of them even while turning much bigger tires. That's the key difference from simply bolting big tires onto a lift kit, where the factory drivetrain carries the full extra load.
Stronger Housings and Backing Plates
GDP portals have been used and refined for years. Whether you choose cast or USA-made 6061 billet aluminum housings, you get strength through design, combined with 5/16" backing plates made from an advanced steel alloy.
- Housings reinforced for gear retention and optimized for oil flow
- Advanced steel alloy backing plates, stronger than chromoly
- Ultra-strong integrated rear hub backing plates replace failure-prone aluminum hubs
- No vents; testing showed vents do more harm than good
- Compatible with Portal Blood, a gear oil formulated for GDP portals
Cast or Billet?
Both housings get the same reinforced design. Billet housings are machined from USA-made 6061 aluminum and have a premium machined look; cast housings bring the kit price down. Pick based on budget and the look you want.
Gaskets, Seals and Bearings
- Advanced gaskets and O-rings with excellent oil resistance and low deterioration
- Sealed input gear and double-lipped output seal
- 100% sealing coverage to prevent oil leaks
- Double angular-contact output bearings to prevent premature wear
- Roller idler and drive bearings to maintain perfect gear mesh
Frame Stiffener Required
A frame stiffener is required with RZR 1000 portals. The stock frame isn't strong enough, and a hard hit can bend it. The stiffener reinforces the frame so you can run 8" portals and monster tires without worry. If you don't already have one, choose "Yes" in the frame stiffener option to add it.
Suspension Setup for Bigger Tires
| Max Tire Size | Required Suspension Setup with 8" Portals |
|---|---|
| 40" | Stock |
| 42" | 1.5" Forward Front A-Arms |
| 44" | 1.5" Forward Front A-Arms and 3" Lift Kit |
| 50" | 7-10" Lift Kit |
Max tire sizes are measured at full compression and full turn and are the largest that fit without rubbing. With minor trimming or a little rub, larger tires can be used.
Wheel Requirements
- 22" or larger wheel required
- Wheels cannot exceed 5" backspacing
- Wheels need a center hole of at least 3.25" (82.55 mm), or a 1" wheel spacer is required
Choosing Year and Model
Select your model (Standard, High Lifter or Trails and Rocks) and year. For 2017 machines, Polaris changed the hardware mid-year, so check the socket size (16 mm or 18 mm) of your OEM hardware and choose the matching 2017 option.
What's in the Box
- (4) Assembled portal hub boxes with 9310 gears, seals, output shaft, advanced gaskets and thrust bearings
- (4) Universal hubs and precision-ground stainless steel slotted rotors with lugs
- (4) Specialized steel alloy backing plates
- (4) Steel caliper mounting plates
- (2) Caliper adapter plates
- (2) Steel steering arms
- (4) Shims (specific year models only)
- Extended brake lines
- All required hardware, including a recessed castle nut socket
- Frame stiffener (if selected)
Who It's For and What Pairs Well
This is for mud and big-tire builds aiming at 40" tires and beyond. To go past 40", add forward-offset A-arms from RZR XP 1000 A-arms or a lift from RZR XP 1000 lift kits. Big tires load the steering, so consider a rack or power steering from RZR XP 1000 steering parts. See smaller portals in RZR XP 1000 portal lifts (4-seat: RZR XP 4 1000 portal lifts).
Fitment
| Year | Make | Model |

Installation Notes
Installation replaces the hubs, rotors, backing plates, caliper mounts and steering arms at all four corners and adds extended brake lines and the frame stiffener. Fill the portal boxes with portal gear oil, bleed the brakes, and align the machine. Separate guides for each version are linked below. A dedicated portal support team is available if you need help choosing the right setup.
