A 4-inch portal gear lift is the most versatile way to get serious ground clearance and room for bigger tires on a 2024+ Polaris RZR XP 1000. Instead of raising the body, portals move the axle centerline down at each wheel, so the whole machine rides 4 inches higher while the gear reduction inside the portal box keeps those bigger tires turning with authority. With a mild 15% or a stronger 30% reduction, this kit suits fast trail riders and rock crawlers alike.

Choosing a Gear Reduction
| Reduction | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 15% | Keeps more top speed | Fast trail and desert riding with moderately bigger tires |
| 30% | More low-end torque | Rock gardens, boulder fields, bounty holes and bigger tires |
A larger tire effectively makes the machine's gearing taller. The portal's reduction brings it back down, so the engine and clutch stay in their happy range and the belt isn't overloaded.
Single or Dual Idler?
Inside each portal box, an idler gear carries power from the axle down to the wheel. The dual idler version adds a second idler gear, splitting the load across twice the gear surface for the strongest gear set available. The two idlers are CNC precision ground so they share the load evenly. The dual setup also adds 3/4" of front and rear offset (1.5" total extension), which slightly lengthens the wheelbase and lets you fit a slightly bigger tire. Dual idlers are offered with billet housings only.
Cast or Billet Housings
- Cast aluminum: the value choice, proven tough on the trail
- 6061 billet aluminum: machined from solid for maximum strength; required for dual idler gearing
Both are reinforced for gear retention and shaped for good oil flow, and both bolt to backing plates made from an advanced steel alloy that's stronger than chromoly.
Why Portals Are Easier on Your Drivetrain
Because the gear reduction happens at the wheel, the axles, front differential, prop shaft and transmission see less torque than they would turning the same big tires without portals. That means less wear, fewer broken axles and a longer life for the expensive parts in the middle of the machine.
Sealed for Mud and Water
- Oil-resistant gaskets and O-rings with low deterioration
- Sealed input gear and double-lip output seal
- 100% sealing coverage to prevent leaks
- Double angular-contact output bearings to prevent premature wear
- Roller idler and drive bearings keep gear mesh precise
- No vents: in the maker's testing, vents let in more trouble than they solved
Max Tire Sizes
| Suspension setup | Single idler | Dual idler |
|---|---|---|
| Stock | 35" | 36" |
| 3" lift kit | 36" | 38" |
| 1.5" forward offset A-arms | 37" | 39" |
| 1.5" forward offset A-arms + 3" lift | 38" | 40" |
| 2" offset A-arms | 38" | 40" |
Sizes are the largest that fit without rubbing at full compression and full turn. With minor trimming or a little rub, larger tires can be used.
Wheel Requirements
- 14" or larger wheels
- Maximum 5" backspacing
- Not compatible with dual beadlock wheels
- Wheel center hole must be at least 3.25" (82.55 mm), or use a 1" wheel spacer
Frame Stiffener Option
More clearance and bigger tires put more load on the frame. The first picker lets you add a frame stiffener to the kit (2024-2025 models only), or skip it if you already have one. Adding it increases the price.
Portals vs. a Traditional Lift Kit
A traditional lift kit raises the body and frame, but the axles, differentials and the lowest parts of the suspension stay roughly where they were, and the CV angles get steeper. Portals lower the wheel relative to the hub, so everything rises together: frame, skid plates, differentials and A-arms. The CV angles stay close to stock, and the built-in gear reduction makes up for the taller tire. For real clearance, portals are the better engineering answer.
Why the 4-Inch Kit Makes Sense
Four inches is the most streetable, trail-friendly portal height. The machine's center of gravity rises less than with taller kits, so it stays more stable on side hills and in corners, and the 15% reduction keeps much of the RZR's top-end speed. It's also compatible with the widest range of wheels, starting at 14 inches, which means many owners can keep the wheels they already have.
Plan the Whole Build
- Pick your tire size first, then choose the reduction and idler setup that supports it
- Check your wheels against the requirements above
- Upgrade ball joints and tie rods for the extra leverage of bigger tires
- Retune the clutch for the new gearing
- Use gear oil formulated for these portals (Portal Blood) and change it on schedule

Who It's For and What Pairs Well
For 2024+ RZR XP and XP 4 owners who want real clearance and 35-40" tires without giving up much speed. Strengthen the front end with ball joints from 2024+ RZR XP A-arms, retune the CVT with a clutch kit from RZR XP 1000 2024+ clutch and transmission, and see the frame stiffener in RZR XP 1000 2024+ chassis and frame parts.
Fitment
| Year | Make | Model |
|---|---|---|
| 2024+ | Polaris | RZR XP |
| 2024+ | Polaris | RZR XP 4 |
Wheel Requirements
- 14” or larger wheel required
- Cannot exceed 5” backspacing
- Not compatible with dual beadlock wheels
- Wheels need to have a center hole of at least 3.25" (82.55mm) or require a 1” wheel spacer
Installation Notes
Portal installation replaces the hubs, rotors and brake lines at all four corners. It's a big but bolt-on job for an experienced home mechanic, and a common shop install. Fill each box with gear oil before riding, check for leaks after the first ride, and change portal oil on schedule. Separate instructions for the single and dual idler versions are linked below.
