The 8-inch portal gear lift is the ultimate mud upgrade for a 2024+ Polaris RZR XP 1000. It raises the machine 8 inches at the hubs, clears 40-inch tires on stock suspension, and packs up to a 70% gear reduction so the engine can spin giant mud tires through the thickest bottoms without cooking the belt or breaking the driveline.
Highlights
- 8" of lift at the hubs: maximum ground clearance
- 45%, 60% or 70% gear reduction
- Single or dual idler gear sets (dual available with billet housings)
- Cast or 6061 billet aluminum housings
- Precision-ground 9310 alloy billet steel gears
- 1.5" diameter 4340 hardened steel drive shaft
- 1.5" forward and rear offset
- Universal hubs set up for 4/156, 4/137, 4/115 or 4/110 bolt patterns
- 40" tires on stock suspension, up to 45" with a lift and offset arms

Gear Reduction Choices
| Reduction | Available as | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 45% | Single idler, cast or billet | Big tires with a balance of torque and speed |
| 60% | Single idler (cast or billet) or dual idler (billet) | Heavy mud and very large tires |
| 70% | Dual idler, billet | The biggest tires and the deepest, thickest mud |
The more reduction, the more torque reaches the tire. With 40-inch-plus tires, that torque is what makes them turn almost as easily as stock.
Why Dual Idlers
A dual idler portal adds a second idler gear to each box, doubling the gear surface that carries the load. That's the strongest gear set available, which matters most with the giant tires and heavy torque of an 8-inch mud build. The idlers are CNC ground for precise mesh so they share the load evenly.
Built Around Proven Housings
Cast aluminum housings keep the cost down, while 6061 billet housings are machined from solid for maximum strength and are required for dual idlers. The housings are reinforced for gear retention and designed for good oil flow, and they mount on 5/16" backing plates made of an advanced steel alloy that's stronger than chromoly.
Driveline Protection
Turning 40-45" tires through mud without portals overloads axles, differentials, the prop shaft and transmission. With the reduction at each hub, those parts carry far less torque, so they wear less and last longer.
Sealing and Bearings
- Oil-resistant gaskets and O-rings with low deterioration rates
- Sealed input gear and double-lip output seal
- Complete sealing coverage against leaks
- Double angular-contact output bearings resist premature wear
- Roller idler and drive bearings hold perfect gear mesh
- No vents, which tested worse than a fully sealed box
Max Tire Sizes
| Suspension setup | Max tire |
|---|---|
| Stock | 40" |
| 3" lift kit | 42" |
| 1.5" forward offset A-arms | 44" |
| 1.5" forward offset A-arms + 3" lift | 45" |
Measured at full compression and full turn without rubbing; minor trimming allows larger sizes.
Wheel Requirements
- 22" or larger wheels
- Maximum 5" backspacing
- Wheel center hole at least 3.25" (82.55 mm), or use a 1" wheel spacer
Frame Stiffener Required
Eight inches of lift and giant tires add a lot of weight and leverage, so the manufacturer requires a frame stiffener with this kit to keep a hard hit from bending the stock frame. Use the first picker to add one (2024-2025 models only); adding it raises the price. Choose "No" only if your machine already has one.
Why Portals Beat a Tall Lift for Mud
In deep mud, what drags is everything hanging under the machine: differentials, skid plates and arms. A conventional lift raises the body but leaves much of that low. Portals drop the wheel center below the hub, so the entire chassis rises 8 inches, including the diffs. The axles keep close to stock angles, which is a big deal when you're putting the power of a 1000 through giant tires.
What an 8-Inch Build Changes
- Much taller ride height and center of gravity: take side hills slower than before
- Large-diameter wheels (22" or bigger) and tall mud tires
- Steering and ball joints see much more leverage, so plan stronger parts
- The frame carries more load, which is why a stiffener is required
- The CVT needs retuning for the new gearing
Choosing Single or Dual
At 45% and 60% you can choose single idler gears in cast or billet housings; dual idler gears come with billet housings at 60% or 70%. If you're running 44-45" tires or plan to spend most of your time in thick mud, the dual idler is worth the extra cost for its strength.
Keep the Gears Happy
The portal boxes are fully sealed and run on gear oil. Use an oil formulated for these portals (Portal Blood), fill each box before the first ride, and change it regularly. After deep water or mud, check for any signs of water in the oil. Mud riding is hard on everything, and fresh oil is cheap insurance for a set of gears this valuable.
Plan the Whole Build
- Pick the tire size and reduction together
- Confirm 22"+ wheels with no more than 5" backspacing and a 3.25" center bore
- Add Mega Keller ball joints and heavy-duty tie rods
- Add a snorkel for deep water
- Install the frame stiffener
The design is covered by U.S. patents 11,299,042 and 11,318,787.
What's in the Box
- (4) Assembled portal hub boxes with 9310 gears, seals, output shaft, gaskets and thrust bearings
- (4) Universal hubs with precision-ground stainless steel slotted rotors and lugs
- (4) Specialized steel alloy backing plates
- (4) Steel caliper mounting plates
- (2) Caliper adapter plates (dual idler only)
- Extended brake lines
- All required hardware, including a recessed castle nut socket
- Frame stiffener, if selected
Who It's For and What Pairs Well
For dedicated mud builds on 2024+ RZR XP and XP 4 machines running 40-45" tires. Add Mega Keller ball joints from 2024+ RZR XP A-arms, a snorkel from RZR XP 1000 2024+ engine and performance, a Stage 2 clutch kit from RZR XP 1000 2024+ clutch and transmission, and the frame stiffener in RZR XP 1000 2024+ chassis and frame parts.
Fitment
| Year | Make | Model |
|---|---|---|
| 2024+ | Polaris | RZR XP |
| 2024+ | Polaris | RZR XP 4 |
Wheel Requirements
- 22” or larger wheel required
- Cannot exceed 5” backspacing
- Wheels need to have a center hole of at least 3.25" (82.55mm) or require a 1” wheel spacer
Installation Notes
Every hub, rotor and brake line is replaced, and the frame stiffener goes in at the same time. It's a major job best done by an experienced mechanic or shop. Fill each box with gear oil before riding, check for leaks after the first outing, and keep up with oil changes. Instructions for each reduction and idler setup are linked below.
